State by State Pool Regulations

Pool laws vary from state to state

Local jurisdictions often require even more than the state. Be sure to check with your local government to find out if more is required.

Some states have no laws regarding private residential pools. In cases like those, we have linked to a local government page (county, city, town) to give you an idea of what to expect. You can always check with friends who have a pool, or call your county offices.

Each state is clickable in the map and hopefully you live in a state that provides helpful information. Even if your state gives comprehensive information, you still need to Google your county, city or town to learn what, if any, requirements they have. Examples of varying requirements are: fencing (heights, perimeters, spacing between slats/ links), lot setbacks and even the availability of water!

Interestingly, above ground pools are often not subjected to the same standards as pools installed in the ground. This means that if you choose to own a Magic Pool, you may not need a fence at all!
